“We want to show all people from other countries and cultures the places in Ulm and Neu-Ulm, where they can find advice and information as well as provide them with useful addresses like pharmacies or grocery stores so that they can settle in more easily. Therefore we have surveyed refugees in Günzburg and Ulm to find out what exactly they need”, says Clarissa Kull, student at the Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences. The idea to create a city map for refugees has been developed within the optional course “Service Learning: Integration Mentoring”, which is a cross-faculty offer of the Centre for interdisciplinary, international and committed learning (ZiieL) at the Neu-Ulm University, together with Mirjam Schlosser from Integration and Equality Office of the administrative district of Neu-Ulm.
Clarissa Kull and her fellow students Joana Widmann, Amrei Kirmaier and Madlen Götz have developed the city map during one semester. It includes, amongst others, information on public transport, pharmacies, hospitals, grocery stores, libraries and governmental aid centres and important call numbers. Pictograms help refugees with no German language skills understand the city plan. In addition, there is a legend in English and Arabic. “Our Syrian guest student, Montaser Al Naser, supported us in translation into Arabic language“, says Clarissa Kull.
To implement the project, the help of the City of Ulm Surcey Section was of particular importance. “There is great demand – we have received many requests for printed city maps for accommodations for refugees in recent months and we have handed out several official city maps”, says Michael Draesner from the City of Ulm Surcey Section. He advised the students on the technical implementation and provided the official city map on a scale of 1:20 000 as a cartographic basis for the project. In addition, Michael Draesner supported the project team in the development of the printing concept, which included, amongst others, paper size, folding, colours and cartographic designing tools.
The city map has been funded by the City of Ulm Surcey Section, the administrative district of Neu-Ulm and the City of Neu-Ulm. The plan has a circulation of 3.000 copies and is available at all central points in Ulm and Neu-Ulm, i.a. at the integration offices, city halls, tourist information offices and accommodations for refugees.

Four students at the Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences have developed a city map of both cities including information on useful addresses and institutions. The project has been carried out in cooperation with refugees and representatives of the municipalities of Ulm and Neu-Ulm as well as the administrative district of Neu-Ulm.
