Germany´s longest tent festival begins in May

8. Mai 2017
From May 24th to July 8th, 2017, the Friedrichsau area of Ulm will be transformed into to an extraordinary festival location. Rock, pop, indie, soul, hip-hop, jazz, world music, cabaret, comedy and variety performers will offer a diverse and colourful programme, with numerous free-of-charge entertainments including bands from the region, children´s performers and idyllic beer gardens all part of the tent festival.
The festival organisers’ successful formula is to combine top-class culture with relaxation all located in the green heart of Ulm. In 2016, the festival attracted 87.000 people, with 25.000 attending the evening programme. “These results demonstrate that we are taking the right approach”, says Kathrin Thumerer, Head of Festival PR and Marketing.
In 2017, 190 volunteers and three full-time employees are planning 77 events over 37 days. The programme offers a wide range of big names such as Pippo Pollina, Josef Hader, Maeckes, Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson, Bosse, Royal Republic, Kris Kristofferson, and Kansa. However, the programme creators also demonstrate their fine taste by hosting newcomers and niche events.
“This year we were able to attract the clown Peter Shub, afro pop-band Takeifa, Federspiel with their special take on Austro Folk, the young ‘Fado’ singer Gisela João, the electro swing-band Ginkgoa, the adventurous composer and pianist Martin Kohlstedt, and the a capella gospel singer Faada Freddy”, says artwork director Jan Ilg.
The almost endless list of famous names includes the world-folk musicians of the Herbert Pixner Project, the mediaeval music band Faun, Patrick Wieland’s concert series ‘Gästetreffen’ with Andrew Roachford und Flo Mega, the Ulm rock band Die Happy, the award-winning jazz trumpeter Nils Wülker, the folk-pop band Mighty Oaks, Gregor Meyle, as well as comedians Micheal Hatzius and Abdelkarim.
