The district of Neu-Ulm fulfils all the criteria and is allowed to use the title for another two years
The district of Neu-Ulm is committed to sustainable, fair trade and consumption and was the first Swabian district to be awarded the Fairtrade certificate in November 2019. The fact that the commitment did not end with the receipt of the certificate, but was actively promoted, is now proven by the second extension of the award to the Fairtrade Circle.
Climate protection manager Matthias Rausch is pleased about the extension of the title: “I am pleased that we as the district of Neu-Ulm are making a contribution to the sustainable anchoring of fair trade. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Fairtrade Steering Group and all those involved for their great commitment.”
Last year, there were various Fairtrade campaigns in the district of Neu-Ulm, especially as part of the district anniversary, as Matthias Rausch reports. In addition, the Fairtrade partners in the district have made a colourful variety of offers: fair breakfast, lecture series, regular participation in the Neu-Ulm weekly market or school project weeks. “Fairtrade projects are particularly important in schools as part of education for sustainable development,” says Matthias Rausch.
Fairtrade products can now be found in almost the entire district: Neu-Ulm, Senden, Illertissen, Weißenhorn, Roggenburg and Nersingen have been designated as Fairtrade municipalities, and several schools can call themselves Fairtrade Schools. In retail and gastronomy, numerous foods or other fair trade products are offered.
Climate protection manager Matthias Rausch believes that this can be further built upon: “We see the confirmed award as motivation and an invitation to continue to work for fair and sustainable consumption.”
The Fairtrade Seal
Fairtrade is considered the best-known social label in the world. It stands for fair pay and campaigns against child labour. The Fairtrade campaign makes it possible to bundle the commitment of all local actors and join the global action for fair trade.
