International Museum Day activities

19. May 2016

Every year since 1977 the International Museum Day is organised worldwide on the third Sunday of May. Numerous museums and exhibition venues in Germany and abroad offer special activities, guided tours, workshops und much more free of charge. The action day is aimed at raising awareness on the thematic diversity of more than 6,500 museums in Germany and the museums worldwide. The wide variety, unique offers and innovative ideas of museums contribute significantly to our cultural and social life.

This year´s theme “Museums and Cultural Landscapes” shows that museums succeed in developing numerous connections in the extensive cultural network. Cultural landscapes are continuously evolving. Museums protect, preserve and present cultural expressions, pictures and stories.

The regional museums and exhibition venues offer a varied programme on this Sunday. The admission is free.

“Museums build bridges from yesterday into tomorrow and between cultures. Therefore, they are existential places of encounter and education.” Stanislaw Tillich, Patron of the International Museum Day, President of the Bundesrat (German Federal Council), Prime Minister of the Free State of Saxony.
