Ulm University is once again among the top 20 universities in Germany in the THE World University Ranking 2024. The University of Ulm performs particularly well in the “Industry” evaluation criterion, which bundles third-party funding and patents. In an international comparison of over 1,900 universities, Ulm University ranks 193rd among the best 200 universities worldwide. THE World University Ranking measures, among other things, the learning environment, research strength and third-party funding.
The renowned ranking of the British magazine “Times Higher Education” (THE) 2024 is led worldwide by the British University of Oxford. This is followed by the US universities Stanford and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The Technical University of Munich is listed as the best German university in 30th place, followed by the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (38th place) and the University of Heidelberg (47th place). The German universities of Erlangen-Nuremberg and Münster as well as the Scottish University of St. Andrews and the University of Macau are tied with the University of Ulm in 193rd place.
“Ulm University is once again the best smaller MINT and Med university in Germany and we are also among the top 200 universities worldwide. In addition to our very good performance in the industrial sector, our research quality, which was rated as excellent, should also be highlighted. “We particularly score points here with citations in scientific journals, which demonstrate our research strength,” says University President Professor Michael Weber.
Compared to previous years, the method for the 20th edition of the World University Rankings has been renewed: instead of 13 performance indicators, 18 criteria from different areas are now included, which are also weighted differently. The areas include teaching, research environment and research quality (including citations, excellence and influence), each of which is valued at around a third. The factors industry (third-party funding and patents) and internationality account for around eleven percent of the rating. From this information, an overall result is determined for each university, from which the ranking is determined.
