Twinkling lights and festive aromas

27. November 2017
Over the next few days and weeks, atmospheric Christmas markets throughout the region will open their doors. Around the festively decorated Christmas booths, is a whole range of additional events. Classical and medieval Christmas markets, winter magic and St. Nicholas markets, village or stable markets – all have their own unique charm and are worth a visit.
Meeting up with friends, a little mulled wine to warm up, or a tasty sausage to satisfy your hunger, looking for new Christmas decorations, buying gifts or just to enjoy the atmosphere – there is always an occasion, whatever your age, to visit to a Christmas market.
A city within a city
The largest Christmas market in the region is the Christmas market in Ulm, which annually attracts guests from all over southern and central Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy. Atmospherically placed in the Münsterplatz, directly in front of the highest church tower in the world, festively decorated wooden booths transform the Christmas market into a small ‘city within a city’. Culinary specialties, toys, handicrafts and Christmas tree decorations as well as carousels for children and a stall with live animals make the Ulm Christmas Market one of the most important events in the city for four weeks each year. In front of the main portal of the Ulmer Münster, festive music and song are offered every day during market opening times.
Christmas time travel
Since 2014, the medieval Christmas market in Neu-Ulm has attracted visitors to the Town Hall Square. In addition to craft stalls and selected market stalls, there an extensive cultural programme on offer. Music ensembles and choirs from around the region, and a themed entertainment programme create a festive mood and tempt you to linger awhile. There’s lots on offer for children too: story-telling, craft activities, pony rides across the market, the world’s smallest Ferris wheel, a carousel and a crib with sheep will all delight the little ones.
Atmospheric markets in the region
There is a large variety of Christmas markets in the Alb-Donau and Neu-Ulm districts. A magical atmosphere is offered by the Ehingen Christmas Market, considered one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in the region, opening its doors in December for 10 days. A secret tip is the atmospheric Christmas Market in the magical setting of the Prälatenhof of the Roggenburg Monastery, which is at its most beautiful after dark. Countless lights on the festively decorated Christmas stalls and Christmas trees illuminate the courtyard.
