For the documentary ‘ZDFzeit’, Prognos AG investigated the question of where in Germany is the best place to live. To that end, the Prognos AG regional scientists created a study to comprehensively measure living conditions across Germany in such a way that all 401 districts and cities were directly comparable. This was achieved through scientific evaluation of statistical data, available individually for all 401 regions.
In the study, each of the 401 districts and cities ranked could achieve a maximum of 300 points, with 100 points awarded in each of the three categories, which were: ‘Work & Living’, ‘Health & Security’ and ‘Leisure & Nature’. The top ranked (City of Munich) achieved 207 points overall, with the lowest ranked (City of Gelsenkirchen) awarded 109 points.
In the overall ranking, Ulm achieved 199 points, putting it in Germany’s 10th place. In the ‘Leisure & Nature’ category, Ulm ranked 15th nationwide. In the ‘Work & Living’ section, Ulm scored 65 points, putting it in 67th place. “The World’s tallest church steeple, the Ulm Minster, towers 161.52 metres over the city” and “The university town of Ulm is also world-renowned as the birthplace of Albert Einstein” are phrases that concluded the summary of the study of Ulm.
With 178 points, the administrative district of Neu-Ulm was placed 94th in the overall ranking, placing it in the top quarter of all 401 districts and cities. Features of the area highlighted in the study included the Vöhlinsschloss Castle, home to the Bavarian Bee Museum, in which the exhibits date from the 15th to the 20th Century, and also include 50 million year old primitive bees in amber.
In the ‘Work & Living’ category, the district received 66 points (55th place), and in ‘Health & Security’ 64 points (64th place).
“In 2017, six caves containing Ice Age art in the Ach and Lonetal Mountains were declared by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites of Humanity. The caves are located in the Baden-Württemberg Alb-Donau-Kreis,” reported the study. The Alb-Donau-Kreis was awarded 175 points, ranking it in 119th place, with top scores for the categories ‘Health & Security’ (66 points = 42nd place) and ‘Work & Living’ (66 points = 56th place).
